Business mileage

20 October 2026

The government have announced an increased to the Approved Mileage Allowance Payment (AMAP)

Earlier in the tax year, the government announced an increase to the approved mileage allowance payment (AMAP) rate for cars and vans, with the rate rising from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles that you travel in a tax year, as from April 2026.

This will have significant impact on a lot of our clients and this could be for a number of reasons – as employers reimbursing mileage claims to employees, as self employed individuals claiming tax relief within sole trader accounts, as director/shareholders reimbursing yourself via the Limited Company or as rental property owners making business mileage claims against rental income.

The change has coincided with HMRC taking a more pro-active stance to reviewing the business mileage claims that are being made and requesting backing data to support such claims.

Given this, we are advising all clients to review their current record keeping practice when it comes to business mileage, to ensure that accurate records are being kept. We have clients using Apps (such as Mile Logger and Mile IQ) to maintain the mileage log, whereas others are keeping a simple spreadsheet to track the mileage.

Whatever method you use, our advice is to keep this up to date regularly, so that an arduous end of year task is avoided!
